About World Passport Museum

World passport museum

The World Passport Museum is planned to launch as a non-profit organization which will showcase historical identity documents such as passports, visas, travel or other documents from 1400’s to 1900’s dating back to centuries. The museum is planned for opening in 2021 in London and Zurich.

We view old historical identity papers such as passports, visas, other identity papers as a true human art. These days all documents such as passports, visas are printed and have totally lost human handwritings completely (obsolete).

Almost all valuable identity papers and old documents have been destroyed, thrown away for being worthless. We want to save history and preserve them from becoming extinct. Further, as the world is fast pacing towards digital world and soon paper passports will be extinct and phased out. There arise a greater need to preserve paper documents with human writings.

The museum will aim to collect any document that has historic value from 1600’s to 1950 era from over 200 countries in the world: Passports, Visa, Citizenship documents, Social security document, Tax receipts, other identity document

The World Passport museum seeks small donations from $10. This money will be spent in buying historical passports and other documents from collectors. If you have any old passports, or any identity papers from 1900’s or before, please donate to us.

History of Passports

The Earliest recorded British passport can be traced back to documents known as ‘safe conducts’ from 1414 Passports have come a long way today with biometric chips.

The History of British passport can be traced back to 1414 in medieval times, where Safe conduct documents, usually notes signed by the monarch, were issued to foreigners as well as English subjects in medieval times. They were first mentioned in an Act of Parliament, the Safe Conducts Act in 1414.

A Safe conduct document to allow the enemy alien to traverse its territory without harassment, bodily harm, or fear of death. Safe conduct is only granted in exceptional circumstances.

Between 1540 and 1685, the Privy Council issued passports, although they were still signed by the monarch until the reign of Charles II when the Secretary of State could sign them instead. The Secretary of State signed all passports in place of the monarch from 1794 onwards, at which time formal records started to be kept in British library.
