Grenada warns criminals abusing citizenship by investment program

Grenada has warned criminals abusing its citizenship by investment (CBI) program, saying Grenada has extradition treaties signed with many countries and those who escape justice using CBI, will have their passports revoked.

“We have extradition treaties with lots of countries, we have an extradition treaty with Russia, and if Russia requests you for anything illegal, we will send you back, we will hand you over,” International Business Minister, Nikolas Steele while attending a conference, said.

Grenada is among one of the five caribbean countries offering CBI program in exchange for one time $150,000 donation or $350,000 investment in real estate.

Grenada Parliament last year passed extradition treaty bill which makes it easier to extradite criminals with CBI passport back to China and maintain close cooperation with china.

Steele said that anyone, who attempts to use Grenada’s citizenship to escape a criminal trial or engage in criminal activity, will lose such a privilege, once the relevant authority draws it to the attention of Grenada.

Steele further said Grenada would also revoke the citizenship and passport, from anyone who is extradited, adding that there have been persons, whose passports were revoked, after receiving Grenadian  citizenship under the initiative.

He declined to provide details on the names and details of persons who have been revoked of passports previously.

Grenada has entered into accession of UN convention of 189 signatories on Transnational organized crime. Grenada is also member of Interpol for fighting international crime.

In 1996, the United States and Grenada signed a mutual legal assistance treaty and an extradition treaty. On November 29th 2016 the Government of Grenada represented by Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Keith Mitchell signed the Inter-Governmental Agreement to implement the U. S. FATCA between the two countries.
