Indians (17%), UK (16%) and Philippines top the the table becoming Australian citizen by previous nationality.
In 2015-16, a total of 133,126 people become Australian citizens by conferral from at least 190 different countries, according to Australian citizenship statistics report.
Australian statistics also show, In the previous year 2014-1015 about, 114,109 clients took the Australian citizenship test and 112,474 clients (or 98.6 per cent) passed the test
Migrants with permanent residency can apply for Australian citizenship under the following conditions:
- have lived in Australia on a valid Australian visa for four years immediately before applying
- must have been a permanent resident for the 12 months immediately before making an application and not have been absent from Australia for more than one year in total, during the four year period, including no more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying.

Australia offers three investor visa streams to high value investors seeking permanent residency in Australia
- Investor visa (subclass 891) to high value investors, who have held a designated investment of AUD 1.5 million for four years.
- The Significant Investor visa is a stream within the Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) (Subclass 188) visa and the Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) (Subclass 888) visa. Significant Investor Visa (SIV) holders are required to invest AUD 5 million into complying significant investments for a minimum of four years before being eligible to apply for a permanent visa.
- The Premium Investor visa (PIV) is a stream within the Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) (Subclass 188) visa and the Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) (Subclass 888). This scheme requires AUD 15 million into complying investments for a minimum of twelve months before being eligible to apply for a permanent visa.
