40% of Swiss nationals have second passports

Switzerland has a population of 8.5 million as of 2018 and has a foreign population of 2 million, equal to a quarter of the permanent resident population.

Since 2010, the number of Swiss citizens possessing second passport has increased by 40%.  About 916,000 Swiss citizens living in the country have dual nationality, further 560,000 Swiss abroad have another passport, reported swissinfo.ch

More swiss nationals are becoming the dual citizens of Italy followed by France, Germany and Turkey.

Swiss nationals may acquire foreign citizenship rights without forfeiting their rights as a Swiss citizen.

In Switzerland, Dual nationals are allowed to take up positions in politics, police or border guards.

Conversely, about 44,515 foreigners acquired swiss citizenship in 2017 according to swiss migration office with number of Germans and Italians becoming swiss citizens.
