Blockchain technology for Passports and Visas

Imagine a world, where there are no immigration controls, no long queues, no airport counters, no paper passports, no paper currency and the world has gone completely digital.

You might be wondering what it is, the answer to that is blockchain technology.

Blockchain is a distributed ledger. Blockchain contains unique data, replicated and shared across various servers geographically and fault tolerant. Blockchain is immutable, and cannot contain fake/duplicate records, works faster and cheaper to manage. Blockchain can hold biometric data of fingerprints, retinal scans and facial detection data. Sensitive data in blockchain can be encrypted protecting privacy, so that only governmenental organizations have access to it.

Digital identities

Blockchain technology is already sweeping the world and it is not too long before the world goes completely digital, phasing out paper based identity documents such as passports and visas. This protects nature saving trees, it also solves lot of problems.

It wont be long before governments share passports, visas, driving licenses on a single international distributed ledger of unique identification powered by blockchain. This will save millions of dollars for governments, saving man power, preventing forgeries/fake documents and digitally catch internationally wanted criminals.

Australia, New Zealand along with many other countries have moved to e-visas. But e-visas does not solve the problem of fake documents. The only way to prevent abuse or forgery, is several countries must share their identification systems data in blockchain and these systems are fragmented with every country, EU has SIS alert database, US has wanted FBI check database. Countries must forge closer cooperation placing trust in blockchain to catch wanted criminals, prevent human trafficking and improve security at borders.

Long Queues

Already many airports are using smart kiosks for faster entry/exits preventing queues.  The software for kiosks only need to be upgraded to include blockchain for checking visas and passports.

Airline checkins

Airline passenger reservation systems can automatically verify visas and passports from blockchain, this will save enormous time for airline employees checking visas and passports during check-ins.

Passports

Carrying paper passports is always a mess. You always have to check your passport whether it is safe and by chance if you lose your passport, it is a nightmare, replacing passport with bureaucratic process and you are stuck in the border for days. The answer to this is digital passports which you can carry in your phone or in other devices. A quick scan of your passport/visa QR code check in Blockchain reveals your identity.

Due diligence

The Blockchain ledger for identity data shared by governments, also speeds up and eases due diligence work of companies.

Digital currencies

The final nail in the coffin towards moving digital world is phasing out paper currencies. Already blockchain lay a foundation for cryptocurrencies (eg. bitcoin), with millions of dollars moved every day in the market, making it cheaper, faster and most importantly blockchain is trusted.

Towards Future

A blockchain based single identification system operated and shared by governments only benefits people and governments making it cheaper, faster, and  propelling human race to next generation.
